Last updated: November 27, 2023

There are still a lot of people who do not put a PC password on their Windows 11 account and we might as well tell you right away, it's a mistake! Indeed, you expose yourself a lot.

Today, laptops in particular follow us everywhere. On these computers, we can then find a lot of sensitive elements. We have work files or even personal files.

Except that quite logically, we do not want these files to fall into the hands of just anyone. This is why in this article, we will guide you to set up a PC password on Windows 11.

Mistakes to avoid for a PC password

First of all, we must return to one point. It is not because you are going to restrict access to your machine that no one will be able to access it. Indeed, either your PC password is not strong enough, it will not last long.

In itself, no combination, even random, is impassable. Just be aware that there are a few mistakes to avoid to make it much more difficult for anyone who wants to get into your computer.

Thus, avoid the great classics such as 000 or even 111 which are extremely easy to guess. Also avoid anything that revolves around birthdays, which are easily found information.

We can even say that the best is a series of numbers and letters that have no meaning. These are clearly the hardest pc passwords to find and therefore the ones that protect you best.

Management software so you don't forget anything

Except that you surely answer us that it is good, but that these passwords begin to become very numerous. Well, be aware that there are vault systems for these.

These are software where you will be able to store all your passwords and where you will therefore only need one to enter and access all the others. In addition, these software also often offer random generators for greater security.

Obviously, this software has a cost, but if you want to protect your data effectively, it is one of the most practical means that currently exists on the data protection market. For more details, see our article: The 5 Best Password Managers in 2023.

How to set a password on Windows 11?

But before thinking about all this, let's see how to set up a password on Windows 11.

To do this, you will have to go to the options of your computer and follow step by step what we are going to tell you here:

  • First head to the Start menu and click on the “Settings” app tile.
  • Next, in the Settings window, click on the “Accounts” tab present on the left sidebar.
  • Then scroll down in the right part of the window to find the thumbnail "Connection options" and click on it to continue.
  • After getting to the next screen, head to the lower part of the window to locate the thumbnail "Password" and click on it to expand the corresponding section.
  • Next, locate the "Add" button which will allow you to change the password. By clicking on this button, a new window will open on your screen so that you can modify the password.
  • Enter the password you want in the "Password" and "Confirm password" fields. Finally, click on the "Next" button.

That's it, the password is now active. Note that you have the possibility to give you a hint in case of lost password. Be careful, however, that this index is not the password itself.

Because yes, when you click on the index, it is displayed publicly. So be subtle to prevent anyone from easily guessing what password you put on Windows 11.

Set up a PIN code

Finally, be aware that it is also possible to set up additional security with Windows Hello. If your device is equipped with fingerprint or facial recognition, you can activate it.

If this is not the case, you can set up a PIN code which will allow you to lock access to certain folders. It is therefore a complementary measure to what we have just seen.

To do this, follow the same path as before. Except this time, scroll through the options until you find Windows Hello. there you will see if it is possible to activate the finger reader or facial recognition.

A little further down you will find the option to configure the PIN code. Choose it and connect with your Windows password. Then, as we saw previously, enter the PIN code twice to validate the procedure.

For this one, you can stick with the numbers. But if you want to make it even more secure, you can check the box to allow letters and symbols. That's it, you now know how to put a password and a PIN code on Windows 11!
