Microsoft doesn't make it easy to reset your password, but luckily there is a workaround for it.recover forgotten Windows 10 password without CD.
In this tutorial, I will show you a simple ways to reset Windows 10 password only for a local account. If you want to reset the password for a Microsoft account, I invite you to follow the instructions in the Microsoft password recovery page.
Reset forgotten or lost password on Windows 10
This method consists of use a bootable USB stick which allows us to modify some non-editable files in Windows. The Hack consists in ensuring that you can launch the command prompt directly from the Windows logon choice screen.
For this, we will go through three steps:
- First, we will access Windows 10 system from bootable USB.
- Once that's done, we'll use the Ease of Access icon to open the Command Prompt.
- From the command prompt, we pass commands to reset a user's password.
To attempt this manipulation, follow these instructions:
- Create a recovery USB drive and start the computer on it. Follow this link to start your computer on a USB stick.
- Then on the new window that opens, click on Repair the computer to open the recovery options.
- Then on the page Choose an option, click at the bottom left on help.
- Then in the new advanced options window, click on Command Prompt.
- Now in the command prompt, we pass the commands that will replace the icon of the ergonomics options. To do this, type the following commands:
- Then we go save the Utilman.exe file by copying it to Utilman.exe.old
- We replace the file Utilman.exe by that of the command prompt (cmd.exe):
- It's over. You can quit Windows and restart your PC normally. On the logon choice screen, click on the button at the bottom left, Ergonomic options.
- The command prompt (cmd.exe) with system privileges is launched. Then type the following commands, taking care to respect the spaces:
So to change the password of the user Rick to 123456, you must enter:
- Then restart the PC and voila! You can log in again with the new password without any worries.
Important!
After recovering your user account, it is best toundo the changes you made.
To do this, boot again on the USB stick, then launch the command prompt as you did previously.
Finally, for restore the configurations you have modified, you will run the following commands:
copy C: \ windows \ system32 \ utilman.exe C: \ windows \ system32 \ cmd.exe
This is the end of this tutorial, I hope it can be useful and help you a lot.
Very nice workaround, honestly I didn't think it would work!
Hi
Unable to validate the command, indicates (the path specified is not found) that my pc is blocked how to unlock, thank you for your help (jjgoudard@orange.fr). cdt
Hello Goudard,
Could you please check the letter of your main hard drive? Generally, the C: is reserved for the disk hosting the Windows system. However, sometimes Windows is installed in D drive or other.
For example, if Windows is installed on drive D, try the following command: cd D:\windows\system32
Hi
how to do without password?
Cdt
With usb key, do you have to indicate cd c
Try this command: "cd D:\windows\system32" (without quotes) and tell me if it works!
Hello Ahmed, well explained tutorial (for the confusion ultiman vs utilman, not very serious…), my problem is that the machine refuses to modify utilman.exe: “file not managed by your version of Windows… (upd do it regularly though)
As for modify.exe (which can also be used for this manipulation, I have the message “read only file”. Thank you in advance if you have an idea…
Bernard
nb G also tried Rescatux and PuppyLinux, same blocking…
Hello BM, can you tell me which version of Windows is running on your device?
This tutorial is totally unusable since it is full of spelling mistakes:
cd c: \ windows \ system32
Next, we will save the Ultiman.exe file NO THIS IS UTILMAN.EXE by copying it to Ultiman.exe.old NO THIS IS UTILMAN.OLD.EXE
copy Utilman.exe Utilman.exe.old NO THIS IS COPY UTILMAN.EXE UTILMAN.OLD.EXE
We replace the Ultiman.exe file NOT THIS IS UTILMAN.EXE by that of the command prompt (cmd.exe):
copy cmd.exe Utilman.exe
The choice of the new name of the executable file Utilman.exe, namely Utilman.old.exe comes from the fact that it is this last file name which is mentioned by you at the end of the tutorial when entering the command line “move”….
Finally is not teacher who wants!
Thank you TREFFORT for your comments, the article has been corrected!
Thank you very much
I think the second command is not necessary
copy C: \ windows \ system32 \ utilman.exe C: \ windows \ system32 \ cmd.exe
