The internet is vast, but much of it is still untouched by ordinary internet users.

In reality, the Internet is huge and has around a billion websites on servers all over the world. You should know that there are different types of web: visible web, dark web and deep web. For those new to the subject, the difference between Dark web and  deep web is non-existent.

And those who know Darknet often confuse it with the deepweb. Here are some explanations for differentiate these network terms used widely.

Before you start, you have to differentiate between the web and the internet.

What is the difference between the web and the internet?

If you think that the words “Web” and “Internet” are the same, you are wrong! The difference between the web and the Internet is more important than we imagine.

Internet is a network

Internet (contraction of Inter Network) is a computer network that connects computers together around the world.

This vast computer network is full of several systems such as FTP (file transfer protocol), VOIP telephony, e-mail service (SMTP, POP, IMAP) and the web.

The web is a hypertext system operating on the Internet

Le websites (abbreviation of World Wide Web) is therefore one system operating on the Internet among others. This system uses the techniques of hypertext, that is to say hyperlinks or links that allow you to surf from one document to another.

The Web is just a system of the Internet, separate from other systems like email, instant messaging, and P2P file sharing.

Now that you know the difference between the Internet and the web, let's move on to the next step: differentiating between the deep Web, Dark web and darknet.

What is the deep web?

Le deepweb (in French deep web), also called hidden web ou invisible web is the part of the web not indexed by the main search engines generalists. It is simply content that is not within the reach of the crawlers of the Google, Yahoo, or Bing search engines.

All websites can contain pages in the deep web. There are in particular Webmails, online banks, sites, some of which are paid.

For example, the paid streaming service Netflix contains a large portion of pages in the deep web. Obviously, search engines will not opt for a monthly subscription to index the catalog of Netflix.

What is Darknet?

darknet is a computer network encrypted built on the existing Internet network. This is the global infrastructure, based on specific protocols integrating anonymization functions.

Specific software or tools are required to access the Darknet. In short, what must be remembered is that the darknet is a network.

What is Darkweb?

Le darkweb Also called the dark web is the web content that exists on darknet networks.  It is an encrypted and anonymous part of the deep web.

Darkweb content is diverse, but often illegal. This is where we find the drug sales platforms in particular. But we also find a lot of legal resources there, which are hidden there for fight against censorship.

So let's recap:

  • The darkweb designates the content,
  • Darknet refers to the infrastructure, a set of encrypted networks allowing access to this content.
  • The deepweb indicates pages not indexed by search engines.
  • The darkweb forms a small part of deepweb, but which is anonymous and encrypted. So not accessible by conventional browsers

I hope this article has helped you understand the component differences of the often confusing web.
